Has Joaquin Phoenix returned to acting?

I heard that he might be starring alongside Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master. If so, this sounds too good to be true! 3 people this good can't make something bad. Not to mention Amy Adams also. Anyway does this mean he changed his mind and is returning to acting?
